This week I made a concerted effort to establish a routine. After reading Making Ideas Happen I had all kinds of motivation to really change patterns and routines in order to maximize my output. However, the phase of life that I’m in has won over more often than not. Moving, having a pregnant wife and a toddler starting nursery school have really dictated my pace as of late. But this past week, I got up at 5:00 and worked until 7:00 on M, W & F. This block was strictly for personal planning and trying to “work on the business rather than in it” (as Michael Gerber would say). No checking email. Actually, no internet connectivity at all. And I tell you what, the output was incredible. And not only that, but I wasn’t really tired through the course of the day. Getting stuff I’m passionate about accomplished is more of a stimulant than coffee.
I’d love to bump up to 4 days a week soon, and eventually 5. I’m in the process of starting a new agency, re-branding myself and this site, revising the demo reel and website for Blue Wagon Studios and thumping around on a passion project that is no small undertaking. There there’s all the client work that’s paying the bills on top of that. 10 hours a week is a sneeze compared to how much I feel like there is to do. But I’ve been encouraged at the results and hope to stay on the upswing.
