The 5 – 7 shift

This week I made a concerted effort to establish a routine. After reading Making Ideas Happen I had all kinds of motivation to really change patterns and routines in order to maximize my output. However, the phase of life that I’m in has won over more often than not. Moving, having a pregnant wife and a toddler starting nursery school have really dictated my pace as of late. But this past week, I got up at 5:00 and worked until 7:00 on M, W & F. This block was strictly for personal planning and trying to “work on the business rather than in it” (as Michael Gerber would say). No checking email. Actually, no internet connectivity at all. And I tell you what, the output was incredible. And not only that, but I wasn’t really tired through the course of the day. Getting stuff I’m passionate about accomplished is more of a stimulant than coffee.

I’d love to bump up to 4 days a week soon, and eventually 5. I’m in the process of starting a new agency, re-branding myself and this site, revising the demo reel and website for Blue Wagon Studios and thumping around on a passion project that is no small undertaking. There there’s all the client work that’s paying the bills on top of that. 10 hours a week is a sneeze compared to how much I feel like there is to do. But I’ve been encouraged at the results and hope to stay on the upswing.

Amazing Work Spaces

This article from FastCompany’s design blog showcases some of the greatest creative office space I’ve seen. Thanks Alissa Walker for bringing these to our attention! Below are some of my favorites from the feature (where you can also see comments from architects/designers on the projects).

My Kind of Office

officepodI could definitely go for one of these in my back yard. The OfficePOD is a European concept (naturally) based out of London. The pod allows it’s proud owner to add office space to their home without reducing their domestic square footage. Not even a permit is needed to install one. Something tells me they won’t be available in Orlando anytime soon – what with all the hurricane resistant measures that would have to be added.

The Next Small Thing… 37signals

There’s plenty of people to be jealous of out there for aspiring creators and entrepreneurs, but 37signals takes the cake. This group of just 7 people have over a million customers for their web based software that is incredibly simple yet astonishingly efficient. It’s just a matter of a few years before they are everywhere. I definitely recommend reading their story.
