12 seconds of Every Other Way

BT’s been dropping a few sneak peeks on 12 seconds for his upcoming album. Here’s the third which is for a track titled Every Other Way. I’m super excited about the new release. His last creation, This Binary Universe was a success on every level.

Call it what it is

cheap red wineThis is refreshing. Sorry if you already caught my quick tweet regarding this admirable branding. But I think it deserves follow up. It’s not only clever but effective. The design is well executed and the product is quality. I’m sure plenty of others would have slapped “Recession Red” or “Stimulus Shiraz” on the label only to continue the use of overly used buzz words about 10 months too late. I appreciate much more a company willing to say it like it is and not try to be so cute with kitschy phrasing.

It is simple. It is clean. It is well executed. It is delicious.

Two great free apps for freelancers

A couple good finds from this past week that I wanted to give shout outs to-

1) Trip Cubby Lite: This one is great for recording mileage when running around to client meetings, picking up equipment/supplies, job sites, etc. It’s the free version, and it includes everything essential you could need. You can add frequent trips that you make on a regular basis, count trips you pay for (taxi, train, etc.), make notes, log the date, odometer start and end or straight up mileage, and make notes for each trip. Then, each month, you can export the whole report in a .csv file straight to your email to pull into Excel for your records. Click here to check it out.

2) Fliq Tasks: Since Google Tasks makes you log in everytime (please iPhone, can we cache with Safari soon?), and I don’t want to spring for a Basecamp subscription yet… I just wanted to find something simple for ongoing reminders I can check off as I get them done. Fliq Tasks is perfect for this. You can add new items quickly- adding categories, specifying priority, noting a due date. Then, you can sort the list based on any of these criteria. On the home screen, the little red icon notes how many incomplete tasks you have at a glance. Go take a look

And then there’s some great games at non cost, albeit lite or demo versions

- Let’s Golf Lite
- MiniGolf 99
- DuckShoot
- Tap ‘n Pop Lite
- Radial 50 Lite
- Action Bowling Free
- SnowLite

The SixtyOne – A music adventure

I always face the challenge of wanting to control my own music while I’m working and often opt not for shuffle, last fm, or even pandora (though I owe a great deal of music finds to it).

However, The SixtyOne offers an interactive element unlike other ‘radio’ type sites. It allows user feedback to jockey the songs around by popularity. It also gives users points based on how songs that they bump accumulate clout. Not to mention there are lots of free downloads available.

One of my favorites I found here that I really enjoy is King Tut. Be sure to check them out when you visit and nab all of their freebies. Very fun experimental stuff that makes good soundtracks for life.

Google Wave

This is a new collaborative tool from Google that has got a lot of people anxious over the past couple weeks. Very exciting stuff. It’s a powerful combination of email + IM + photosharing + blogging + project managing.

The video is an hour and twenty minutes… but well worth it. It’s fun to see the brothers behind the development (the same ones that also did Google Maps).

If I see one more recession commercial…

I swear I’ll loose it.

Ever since bailout rumors started back in December of 08, every marketing department in the country seems to have jumped on the bandwagon. McDonald’s has signs all over for their “Stimulus Plan” of $5 value meals. Domino’s Pizza had their CEO walking down the streets of DC talking about their Bailout (and through the ordeal the ended up with a logistical error causing them to give away 11,000 pizzas due to a coupon they never intended to be redeemed). And here in Orlando I’ve seen the Daytona Beach ads with simple white text on a black screen reading “We’ve got your economic stimulus plan right here” – cut to a family on the beach with the Daytona logo.

Um… huh?

It’s not even close to creative anymore. And I swear that I (and others I know) will actually turn tail and run from companies doing it. It’s just leaving a very poor impression this late into the whole ordeal. Go back to the drawing board and scrap up something new and clever… please.

Fun Photography

My brother Ryan in Chicago had recently posted some photos of the city he took. I love the depth of field and unique look to them. It’s like a miniature model that you could reach down into and pluck up one of the buildings or cars.

Apparently it’s a fun effect called the Tilt Shift. After he told me about it, I started finding all kinds of great examples. Very fun to mess with for photographers.

Sprint Now Campaign

Even though years ago I left Sprint and swore I would never go back, I will admit I’m thoroughly impressed by the Now campaign.

The commercials are really well done and clever. Good animation and film combos are always fun. The stats are fun too, though I wonder how they did their research on some of the topics (ie. leaving phones in cabs)

The Now widgets at now.sprint.com are great too. The page takes a little bit of loading time, but it’s worth it. They pretty well follow the theme of the commercials. Lots of random facts and interaction. My favorites include the number of people trapped in an elevator, habitable planets counter, and push now.

I’d love to see the math on how this campaign stacks up against the tired “can you hear me now” guy.
